Brady was born in Salt Lake City into a big musical family.  She studied both piano and ballet from a young age, and began voice lessons at the age of 16. Brady moved to California at the age of 18 and performed in regional theater productions for the next few years, landing such roles as: Maria in Sound of Music, Anita in West Side Story, Eliza in My Fair Lady and her personal favorite: a "wench" in Camelot.

At 23, Brady discovered traditional jazz and was hired by Stan Mark to sing with his "River City Stomperz." Brady co-founded the "Wooden Nickel Jass Band" a couple of years later and sang with that group for the next ten years, until it disbanded in 2003.
