Dave's father and two uncles were both banjo players in the area around Otisville where Dave was born. He started strumming at the age of seven and joined his father's band at eight.

Later on he took up the trumpet, flugelhorn, and vibes, playing with a number of traditional and swing bands in the Flint-Detroit areas. His formal education took place at Flint's Mott Community College.

By day, he is the long-time city manager of Otisville. He joined the band in 1979.
